Meet the committee

  • Charlie Kniebe-Evans (President)

    ucbc.president@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi, I’m Charlie (she/her) - the current President for UCBC! My rowing journey began as a novice fresher at Univ in 2018 and (with a few bumps along the way) I ended up as captain of the Headship winning women’s crew at Summer Eights 2022! I am now continuing my UCBC journey as President! When I’m not at the river for crew training or chopping about in a single, I’m probably out for pancakes at one of our regular crew breakfasts!

  • An image of Lloyd smiling on a beach

    Lloyd Arnold (Vice-President)

    ucbc.vp@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I'm Lloyd (he/him), a fourth-year student studying Computer Science and Philosophy. I've rowed since Trinity of my first year (covid ruined my original attempts in Michaelmas), and before that swam, hurdled, and played volleyball, hockey and rugby. I'm originally from Poole in Dorset, on the South coast of England, and contrary to popular belief do not have any Scandinavian heritage. My primary goals as Vice-President are to encourage more people within college to get involved in rowing, so if you are interested, please do drop me an email, either on ucbc.vp@univ.ox.ac.uk, or lloyd.arnold@univ.ox.ac.uk.

  • Adam smiling with a dumb haircut

    Adam Sakabani (Secretary)

    ucbc.secretary@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi, I'm Adam (he/him), a third year physicist and your trusty secretary. Kit design and ordering are my game, making sure our crew looks as sharp as our strokes. From brainstorming snazzy designs to ensuring our gear arrives on point, I've got it covered (don’t worry, it will look much better than my hair).

When I'm not crafting the next winning look for the team, you'll find me sat in three seat or going for a swim next to a single. Having tasted blades with M2, I'm all about translating that winning spirit into every aspect of our club. Join me in the quest for both rowing triumphs and fashion excellence – it's a journey that's as thrilling as it is well-dressed!

  • The image displays a full body shot of Nik running on a path surrounded by greenery and a river.

    Nikolaos Kanellakis (Co-Treasurer)

    ucbc.treasurer@univ.ox.ac.uk

I am Nick (he/him) and I am the current Treasurer (time is money, bio will be short). I joined UCBC as a cox two years ago and I have enjoyed every moment on and off the water. Racing Summer Torpids 2021 was more than amazing. If you have any questions do not hesitate to drop an email.

  • Ben Solomons (Co-Treasurer)

    ucbc.treasurer@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I'm Ben (he/him), a 4th year Maths & CS student and the Boat Club's Co-Treasurer. When not being asked by Jono to cox quieter (I genuinely did not know this was a thing one could be asked) you may well find me hunched over the financial spreadsheets, with true computer scientist posture. Famed for using the coxing microphone for stand up comedy, I steered W2 to go +1 last Torpids and am looking forward to all the bumps to come this year. If you have any questions or concerns about finances, feel free to get in touch!

  • Tara smiling

    Tara Narayan (Women's Co-Captain)

    ucbc.womenscaptain@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I’m Tara (she/her), one of your Women’s Co-Captains and a second year PPE student from Sydney. As Women’s Captains we’re looking forward to another year of good vibes:sparkles: and good rowing:muscle:

When not on the water, you can find me singing with the jazz orchestra or baking for my crew!

  • Alex Jones (Women's Co-Captain)

    ucbc.womensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I’m Alex (she/her) a third year law student from Glasgow. I’m your co-captain alongside Tara and I’m really excited to welcome lots of new faces to the club and to have a great year of rowing!

  • Gregory Cuff (Men's Captain)

    ucbc.mensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

I’m Greg (he/him), a third year PPE student, and this year’s UCBC Men’s Captain. I’m from Hamilton, Canada and started rowing in my first year. Last year I was one of the vice-captains. I’m looking forward to another year of Univ bumps and blades!

  • Kira Baughan (Captain of Coxes)

    ucbc.coxes@univ.ox.ac.uk

I'm Kira (She/Her), a third year historian and in true coxing spirit, I'll keep this short and sweet! I started coxing in my first year and personally believe a Cox is the best thing to be (no blisters but still get the same tankards) - this year I am committed to persuading everyone in the boat club of this fact. If you have any questions about how many layers to wear to an outing, or how to get involved with piloting a boat, get in touch!

  • Antonio Mihai (Men's Vice-Captain)

    ucbc.mensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hey, I'm Toni (he/him)! Learned the ropes last year and had a blast in M3. Now, I'm all about passin' on the rowing fever to the newbies. Let's make your first strokes as epic as mine were – get ready for an awesome ride! 🚣‍♂️🌟

  • Ciaran Moscrop (Men's Vice-Captain)

    ucbc.mensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Aye up, I'm Ciaran (he/him), one of the blokes holding the fort as a Men's Vice Captain. Hailin' from t' north of England, I've been rowin' since before uni days. Join our crew for a proper good time on th' water. Let's give it beans and show these rivers what we're made of! 🚣‍♂️🌊

  • Ali Gowlett (Women's Vice Captain)

    ucbc.womensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hey there, I'm Ali (she/her) – cox extraordinaire and one of your Women's Vice-Captains! I live for the thrill of the water and the camaraderie of the crew. New novices, you're in for a blast! Let's make waves, share laughs, and row our hearts out together. 🚣‍♀️💫

  • Grace Kimber (Women's Vice-Captain)

    ucbc.womensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I'm Grace (she/her), a second year biomedical scientist. I started rowing as a novice fresher last Michaelmas and I've enjoyed every moment! I'm looking forward to meeting new rowers and another year on the river!

  • James Trenaman (Social Secretary)

    ucbc.social@univ.ox.ac.uk

I'm James, a third year PPEist and one of this year's social secs. I started rowing here at Univ and have raced in M2 for the last two seasons. My focus this is on the Men's side and whole club socials, so join us for one of the many events we have planned this year.

  • George Crooks (Equipment Officer)

    ucbc.boats@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I’m George (he/him), a fourth year Engineering student. I learnt to row in my first year here, and have rowed on and off since. This year I’m the club’s equipment officer, so if you’ve got any issues/queries about any of the club kit or boats then be sure to drop me a message or email ucbc.boats@univ.ox.ac.uk.

  • Louisa Boult (Welfare Officer)

    ucbc.womensvc@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! My name’s Louisa (she/her) and I’m a third year medic. More importantly, I’m this year’s Welfare Officer! I started rowing with UCBC as a fresher, and since then have made so many great memories :) see you on the water!

  • The image of Andy contains him rowing.

    Andy Bridger (IT Officer)

    ucbc.itofficer@univ.ox.ac.uk

I’m Andy (he/him) and I’m UCBC’s IT officer. I joined UCBC as an undergrad chemist in MT16, first rowed in M1 in TT18, served as men’s captain from MT19 to TT22 and as president in the 22/23 season. When I get a spare few hours off rowing I do a DPhil in Inorganic Chemsitry.

  • Alex Rigamonti (Social Secretary)

    ucbc.socials@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hi! I’m Alex (he/him) and I’m a second year PPEist. I took up coxing as a fresher last year! Alongside James, Bertie, and Hari we’ll be organising social events for the year ahead, with my particular focus being on novice and women’s side events!

  • Hari Pankhania (Social Secretary)

    ucbc.socials@univ.ox.ac.uk

Salutations to the enigma-seekers and the perpetual ponderers of existence! I am Hari Pankhania (he/him), an avant-garde explorer of the cosmic mysteries, or perhaps just a simple human—I can't quite recall the specific designation of my intellectual pursuit at the moment.

In the labyrinth of life, I find myself entangled in the enigmatic art of oar propulsion, a pursuit that aligns seamlessly with my ethereal journey through the realms of knowledge—or at least that's what I think I've embarked upon. Is it a multidisciplinary convergence of the metaphysical and the physical, or is it simply an excuse to gracefully navigate aqueous expanses while contemplating the intricate interconnectedness of subatomic particles?

As I float through the currents of existence, one moment delving into the intricacies of celestial harmonies, the next embarking on a whimsical expedition across liquid landscapes, I invite you to join me in deciphering the grand puzzle of... well, whatever it is that I'm piecing together. Together, we shall navigate the fluidity of existence, transcending the boundaries of mundanity while embracing the perplexities of my chosen, albeit elusive, academic discipline.

So, whether you find me immersed in the arcane art of paddle-wielding or lost in the boundless corridors of scholarly contemplation, know that my voyage through academia and aqueous expanses is a riddle wrapped in an enigma—or perhaps it's a paddle wrapped in a quantum waveform. Let's uncover the ineffable truths of the universe, or at least attempt to remember what I'm studying, as we traverse the tides of curiosity together.

Join me on a quest of self-discovery and intellectual befuddlement. Just remember, the journey may be convoluted, but the laughter is guaranteed!

  • Bertie Coomber (Social Secretary)

    ucbc.socials@univ.ox.ac.uk

Hey there, fellow river enthusiasts! I'm Albert Coomber (he/him), a third-year chemistry whiz with a passion for both molecules and oars. When I'm not uncovering the secrets of the periodic table, you'll find me gliding gracefully (or at least attempting to) across the waterways with my rowing crew.

They say I'm like a chemical reaction on the water – full of energy and occasionally explosive! Whether it's decoding the mysteries of rowing technique or deciphering complex compounds, I'm all about that perfect balance. And hey, if rowing were an element, I'd be its most enthusiastic electron!

So, join me in my quest to navigate both the world of chemistry and the currents. Let's paddle our way to success, and remember, rowing might not always be smooth, but it's a whole lot like science – equal parts determination and experimentation. If you spot a guy who's simultaneously chasing rowing glory and elusive electrons, that's probably me.

Catch me on the river or in the lab – I promise I won't mix up my test tubes with my oars!

Remember, balance is key – in both rowing and chemistry! If you need any more assistance, feel free to ask.

Coaches

  • Jonathan Cheesman

I have been coaching at Univ for the past 5 years coaching the M1 and W1 crews. I also have been overseeing the club coaching programme, to help develop all of our athletes. Before coming to Univ I was the Head of Rowing at Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton. I have been coaching for 30 years and have coached at all levels, from beginners to Internationals; and all ages from 12 all the way up to masters in their 80s. I have extensive experience coaching University athletes, having coached at both Newcastle and Cardiff Universities.

  • Argyris Stasinakis

Argyris Stasinakis joined Univ as W2 coach in 2013. He claims that he enjoys the early mornings (esp Sundays 6am) and that he cannot discern when his crew trains on a hangover. He talks a lot, sometimes. Argy started his rowing career at Keble M2 (1991) and later with Wolfson. He loves College rowing and the thrill of Univ W2 beating the odds. He rowed for City of Oxford and has been rowing with Oxford Academicals since 2016. When not on the river or the towpath, Argy is a keen entrepreneur. He is strategy officer and partner at MarineTraffic, a maritime intelligence business. He also sits on the board of start up companies and thoroughly enjoys mentoring young professionals.

    Andrew Gregory

    andrew.gregory@univ.ox.ac.uk

I am the college chaplain and one of the two 'senior members' of UCBC. My role is to support the club and its members, to provide some institutional memory that remains as each cohort of students departs, and to liaise between the club and other parts of the College, including its Governing Body and those entrusted with its day-to-day operational management. You'll see me on the bank rather than on the water, and UCBC members (and other students) are always welcome to email me, to knock my door, or to catch me around the College.

  • Michael Collins

I was asked by the Master at my interview what I would do other than teach. "I'll coach the 1st Eight", I replied, only to see the collective Fellowship jaw drop - but they still elected me! I did coach several times in the 1970s and 80s, but only after proving myself with the 2nd Torpid, despite having previously coached a St John's Torpid to the Headship... I became the Senior Member of UCBC in 1992 and rebuilt the fleet after the fire in 1999. I act as the point of contact with Old Members and manage the 1990 Fund.
